Chaim Rubin is only 7 years old.
A year ago, after more than a year of difficult treatments, his parents finally heard the words they had been praying for: Chaim had beaten cancer.
He went back to school, back to his friends, and back to simply being a child.
But at the beginning of Av, everything changed again.
The seizures returned, and then came the devastating news:
The medulloblastoma was back.
Chaim has already started treatment to help control the disease, but to give him the chance he desperately needs, his family must now get him to the United States for advanced treatment.
The hospital requires a significant deposit upfront, and after already using their savings and everything they had available, the family simply cannot do this alone.
They nee...

Baltimore, MD — Between tuition, groceries, busing, and everything that comes before Yom Tov, most Baltimore households aren't looking for one more thing to figure out. But there's one bill that can come down without anything changing at home.
Maryland's community solar program lets BGE customers draw their electricity from a local solar farm instead of putting panels on their own roof. BGE stays the utility — same wires, same service, same bill — and the savings appear as a credit on that bill. For Baltimore households, that's 20% off the electric bill.
Lower Your Bill handles the enrollment itself rather than passing names to a third party, and says both sides of the program are frum-run: the company managing the enrollment and the so...
September 16, 2026 - Daf Yomi has begun to learn Shiluach Hakan, the last perek in Chulin. STAR-K invites Daf Yomi learners to review "Shiluach Hakan," a concise summary of the halacha l'maaseh by Rabbi Zvi Goldberg and reviewed by Rav Moshe Heinemann shlit"a.
A few weeks ago, I was walking through Jerusalem's Old Katamon neighborhood on my way to the iconic Shtiblach minyan factory to catch Mincha when I found myself on Rabbi Ze'ira Street.
I had seen the street sign before, but this time the name caught my attention. I vaguely recalled learning about Rabbi Ze'ira and his extraordinary love for Eretz Yisrael, so when I got home I decided to do some research and found a string of fascinating Talmudic stories about him.
Rabbi Ze'ira lived in Babylonia, which at the time was the world's leading center of Torah scholarship. He studied under the great sage Rav Yehuda and enjoyed the many opportunities for learning that came with living in the heart of the Jewish world.
Despite these benefits, he longed...
Greater Washington - September 16,2026 - It is hard to capture emotion and inspiration in words. Writing about a feeling is a little like trying to describe a taste, you can explain it, but somehow the description always falls short of the experience itself.
Trying to capture the inspiration of the LEV Experience is much the same. To truly understand it, you need to participate in person. Still, if I may, I would like to open a small window into the inspiration and power of spending Rosh Hashanah with the LEV Experience in Rockville, Maryland.
The program is designed as a unique hybrid, combining traditional tefillah with opportunities for people at every level of Jewish knowledge and observance to participate, learn, and grow. There is beautiful davening and singing, capturing the t...
The back-to-school season is usually an exciting time for students. But for college-bound Jewish students navigating increased antisemitism, this time can be confusing and stressful. Two Maryland students are refusing to give in to fear.
At the University of Maryland, rising seniors Lucy Schneider and Gabriel (Gabi) Stern have chosen proactive advocacy over retreat. Lucy and Gabi are LIAT (Leaders in Advocacy Training) fellows at the Orthodox Union Advocacy Center (OUA), the federal advocacy arm of the Orthodox Union.
The LIAT Fellowship was created after October 7 with the goal of fostering the next generation of Jewish political leaders. The fellowship selects Jewish students who are passionate about Jewish advocacy, and provides them with resources, mentorship, training, and a w...

Baltimore, MD – Sept. 15, 2026 – Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and City Council President Zeke Cohen have introduced legislation that would create a new city department responsible for responding to certain nonviolent emergency calls without police involvement.
The proposed Department of Neighborhood Safety would operate alongside the Baltimore Police Department and Baltimore City Fire Department as an additional branch of the city’s public safety system. It would incorporate the existing Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, known as MONSE, while establishing a broader alternative-response program.
Under the proposal, trained professionals such as social workers, behavioral health clinicians, and recovery counselors could be dispatched to calls th...
Vilnius, Lithuania – Sept. 15, 2026 – NATO fighter jets shot down an unidentified drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace overnight, marking the first time an unmanned aircraft has been intercepted over the NATO member country, according to Lithuanian officials.
The drone was brought down near Pratkūnai, approximately 60 miles west of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius and close to the Kaunas Reservoir. Lithuanian soldiers secured the area after the wreckage was located.
Officials have not yet determined where the drone originated or what its intended target may have been. Antanas Matutis, commander of the Lithuanian Air Force, said preliminary evidence indicated that the aircraft was likely carrying explosives. A full investigation is underway.

A group of children stood across from a target, each one holding a bow and arrow. The instructor stood in front of them, carefully demonstrating how to position the bow, where to place the arrow, how to pull back the string, and, most importantly, how to aim.
The children began taking turns. Some arrows landed close to the bullseye, while others missed the mark by a little more. Overall, though, they were doing quite well.
Then one boy raised his hand. “I don’t get it,” he said.
The instructor looked at him. “What don’t you get?”
“I think I’d feel much better if I could just move the arrow a quarter of an inch before I shoot it. Then I could hold it better and make sure it’s exactly where I want it.”
The instructor smiled. ...
DIASPORA AFFAIRS: From fleeing Nazi persecution as a baby to building a life in the US, Morton Pancer’s journey has brought him to Israel at age 86.
Morton Pancer, 86, and his wife, Carole, 82, spent 57 years of marriage building a life together in Maryland. This week, after decades in the United States, they decided it was finally time to move home to Israel.
On August 25, the couple arrived on an El Al flight and officially made aliyah with Nefesh B’Nefesh, moving to Israel to be closer to their family and begin a new chapter of their lives.
One of their daughters, Jessica Gertel, made aliyah with her family in the early 2000s, while another, Shoshana Lerner, made aliyah this year with her family, giving them even more incentive to join them in the Jewish state.
