Baltimore, MD - August 5, 2026 While summer often brings a welcome chance to recharge, many educators across our community chose to spend part of their break investing in their professional growth through Jewish Educational Services’ new Zoom In This Summer series. The three-session virtual learning opportunity was designed to offer practical, relevant strategies that teachers could immediately bring back to their classrooms in the fall. Using data from past surveys, JES piloted a summer Zoom series to reduce some barriers that often prevent teachers from participating in professional development during the school year. The response was clear - 50 teachers registered from 18 different schools, showcasing the need for this type of program.
The series began with B'More Inclusive: Tackle Teasing and Isolation, led by Yael Zelinger, who shared strategies for helping students navigate differences, build empathy, and create more inclusive classroom communities. Participants explored ways to have meaningful conversations about visible and invisible differences while fostering a culture of belonging.
In the second session, Sarah Ottensoser focused on Systems and Routines: High-Impact Classroom Structures that Build Student Independence. Educators learned how clear routines and intentional systems help students develop executive functioning skills, become more independent learners, and feel more confident in the classroom.
The final session, The 3Rs of an Effective Classroom Environment: Rules, Rewards & Results, featured Chaya Tropper, who shared practical approaches for creating consistent classroom expectations and positive learning environments where students can thrive.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Educators appreciated the practical, classroom-ready ideas and the opportunity to learn from colleagues during the summer months. Several participants attended all three sessions, a testament both to the quality of the learning and to the commitment educators have to continually refining their craft. Even during summer break, our community of educators demonstrated that professional growth remains a priority.
JES also launched a new Lunch 'N Learn professional development series this summer with Engaging All Learners: Techniques to Keep All Students Interested and Focused, facilitated by Chaya Tropper. The session explored what drives student engagement, how to increase active participation, and simple strategies for reaching diverse learners. The event brought together 18 educators in person and 8 more via Zoom, creating a lively learning community focused on sharing ideas and strengthening classroom practice.
The excitement doesn't stop there. Beginning after the fall holidays, Lunch 'N Learn with JES will be coming directly to schools, making it even easier for educators to access high-quality professional learning alongside their colleagues. More information will be shared in the coming months, and JES is looking forward to bringing these engaging sessions to school communities throughout the year.
Together, Zoom In This Summer and Lunch 'N Learn reflect JES's commitment to providing meaningful, accessible professional development that meets educators where they are. Whether joining from home on a summer afternoon or gathering with colleagues over lunch, participants left with new ideas, renewed energy, and practical strategies to support student success.
