Baltimore, MD – August 31, 2026 - On Sunday August 30, 2006, volunteers with the Jewish Cemetery Association of Baltimore came together for a Cemetery Cleanup Day, dedicating their time and effort to maintaining and preserving local Jewish cemeteries.

At Hebrew Friendship Cemetery, Steve Venick, Jeremy Diamond, Jeff Karlin, Fred Peterson, David Antwerpen, and Mendel Davis joined together for the cleanup effort. Additional volunteers spent the day working at the German Hill Road Cemetery.

These cleanup days are held several times throughout the year and include a variety of hands-on projects aimed at preserving the dignity and appearance of the cemeteries. Volunteers assist with general cleanup, cleaning headstones, and repairing and resetting headstones that have fallen over.

The effort is part of the broader work of the Jewish Cemetery Association of Baltimore, whose mission is to provide for the ongoing, efficient, and effective care and leadership of Jewish cemeteries throughout the Baltimore area.

Maintaining these sacred grounds is an important communal responsibility and an enduring act of kavod hameis. Through its ongoing management and these volunteer cleanup days, the Association helps ensure that Baltimore’s Jewish cemeteries and the resting places of generations past continue to be cared for with dignity and respect.
