Rabbi Yossie Charner, Agudath Israel’s director of congressional affairs, spoke at a press conference today on Capitol Hill calling for the passage of the bipartisan Right to Worship Act.

The Right to Worship Act, introduced by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Representatives Brad Knott (R-NC) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY), would establish a 100-foot buffer zone around houses of worship, making it unlawful to disrupt or impede individuals seeking to attend or participate in religious worship.

Speaking alongside congressional leaders and a broad coalition of faith and community leaders Rabbi Charner emphasized the importance of ensuring that Americans can enter houses of worship and participate in religious services without fear, intimidation, or obstruction.

“Religious freedom is not an abstract constitutional principle to those of us who live our faith every day,” said Rabbi Charner. “It is personal. It means being able to pray, in a synagogue without fear. Religious liberty cannot exist only on paper. It must exist in practice. Because the freedom to worship means very little without the freedom to worship without fear.”

Agudath Israel thanks Senators Cruz and Slotkin and Representatives Knott and Suozzi for their leadership in advancing the legislation and urged Congress to enact the Right to Worship Act as soon as possible.
